Bullpen mate Ryne Stanek, who pitched his way out of trouble earlier in the game himself, called Diaz "Houdini" and "incredible" for his magic act. Mark Vientos, who homered and drove in two runs, was glad Diaz got out of the "sticky situation."

Mets manager Calos Mendoza says he had never seen a pitcher have to change his cleats in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out. Diaz struck out two batters after changing his footwear before alertly covering first base for the final out. Mendoza offered, "that's what makes him who he is."
