The Mets leadership group all pointed to the team's poor defensive play as a major reason why they enter the final week of the regular season out of a wild card spot, after two brutal losses to the Nationals. Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo all agreed the only thing they can control is their own play and not what the other teams competing against them are doing. For Alonso, possibly playing his last Mets home game at Citi Field, the best solution is to "leave it all out there the last six games."

With the Mets possibly on the outside of the postseason looking in after a 3-2 loss to Washington, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza didn't waver. "We have to keep going... a lot can happen." Mendoza also touched on the strange play in the third inning when the Mets scored their first run and the two incredible catches by Washington's Jacob Young.

While poor defense cost the Mets again in their 3-2 loss to the Nationals on Sunday, it was two spectacular catches by Washington CF Jacob Young that proved to  the difference in the game Young robbed both Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez of extra-base hits and in the case of Alvarez, a game-tying home run in the ninth inning.

Nolan McLean was solid again on the mound but got no help from his defense that botched plays and allowed Washington to take advantage of the miscues.

The Mets mounted a furious late game rally to tie the Nationals at 3-3, but Daylen Lile's two-run inside-the-park-home run in the 11th inning gave Washington a 5-3 victory. Mets starter Nolan McLean was victimized by some shoddy defense, allowing three runs over five innings but only one of them earned.
