The Yankees, desperate for depth, signed utility infielder Cliff Pennington to a minor-league deal on Thursday, the team announced on Friday.

Pennington, 34, spent a full Spring Training with the Oakland A's but was cut after they opened the season in Tokyo.

The 11-year veteran is primarily a shortstop but can play second and third base, too, and also has some experience in the outfield. He played just 16 games last year with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Yankees have been bombarded by injuries early in the season, particularly in their infield, losing third baseman Miguel Andujar and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to the injured list within days of each other.

They are also without shortstop Didi Gregorius for at least the first half of the season as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery he had after the end of last season.

Pennington will be assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
