The frustration over the Yankees' injuries this season is beginning to mount for Brian Cashman, particularly with ace Luis Severino.

The Yankees GM provided more updates on Sunday on the 25-year-old right-hander, who was shut down again on Saturday after an MRI discovered his lat strain was only 90 percent healed.

"Clearly, in hindsight, he never should have started his throwing program," Cashman said. "He passed all his physical testing. He was strong. They made a determination not to do an MRI. And normally they don't do an MRI to follow up after the down period of time. They test him out."

Cashman is still optimistic Severino can return to pitch this season. The right-hander has been sidelined since early Spring Training when he experienced shoulder inflammation and then was discovered to have a Grade 2 lat strain in April that he has been rehabbing since.

Severino has not missed this much time with an injury before, and the frustrations are mounting for him, too.

"He doesn't like going in the MRI tube," Cashman said. "So it's something I know he would have pushed back on. But clearly, if we could've turned the clock back, (we would have) done an MRI maybe three weeks ago now. But it wasn't done. We can't change that. So we just did one before we left here, after the complaint, and we'll do another one now, and we'll keep doing them until we know he's clear."

The Yankees have had 19 different players spend time on the IL this season, and on Saturday got another scare when Luke Voit exited the game with an abdominal strain.

"We've had a number of injuries this year," Cashman said. "Most of them are unavoidable. Some of them, we could have done something differently, maybe, along the way. Or the patient could have done something differently along the way. And that's not atypical.

"But again, trust me, we know how important our season and our team and our individual players are. We're always trying to do the best we possibly can at all levels, whether it's player acquisition, player care.
