While the NFL has announced its preseason and regular season schedule for 2020 and for now intends to stage those games with fans in attendance (some teams are already selling tickets), uncertainty continues to swirl due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The league understands the need to be flexible due to the pandemic, and has stated as much.

Each state is free to determine protocol for outdoor and indoor events when it comes to the amount of people (if any) allowed to be in attendance, and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott recently said professional and collegiate stadiums can operate at 50 percent seating capacity.

New Jersey is currently in Phase 2 of reopening, and Gov. Phil Murphy spoke with Sports Illustrated about the potential of Giants and Jets fans being allowed to attend games during the 2020 season.

"I've spoken to Roger Goodell, we speak with the Giants and the Jets all the time," Murphy said. "I think it's too early to tell on fans. We're taking at this point, baby steps and slowly but surely trying to get there beginning with the staffs, the coaches, the players and I think we have to see where it goes from here.

"The trends in New Jersey right now -- we have over 12,000 fatalities -- but the ones we talk about each day are folks that have been infected for weeks. You look at the other data for the past several weeks, it is all gotten really quite good. We're not out of the woods yet, but we're getting much, much better."

As of Saturday afternoon, New Jersey had suffered 12,106 coronavirus deaths, including 60 new deaths that were reported on Saturday.

Explaining that "the data right now is good" in terms of the direction it's trending, Murphy noted that "there is a possibility" fans will be able to return at some point during the 2020 season. But he also touched on the lack of clarity regarding what might happen with the virus.

". ... I don't think anyone has that crystal ball with complete clarity of where this virus is going to go, where our behavior is going to go…on top of the worst health care crisis in the history of the country, we now have an extraordinary killing in broad daylight of a black man that has stain of racism," Murphy said. "And the protesting and now people are congregating to voice their angry which I completely get, I completely support. But that's another dimension we now have to add in to where this is taking us."
