The Giants fell to the Dallas Cowboys in overtime by a score of 40-37 are now 0-2 on the season.

Trailing 27-23 late in the fourth quarter, the Giants had a chance to take the lead. But Jaxson Dart, who made his NFL debut and ran a handful of plays, stumbled on a second-and-short run, resulting in a loss, and Russell Wilson threw one behind Malik Nabers for a drop on third down.

With hope waning and the Giants facing a fourth-and-four, Wilson threw one of his patented moon balls, hitting Wan'Dale Robinson in the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown, putting New York on top.

But the Cowboys had a chance to answer, and after a diving catch by Jalen Tolbert on fourth down kept the drive alive, Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb drove Dallas down inside the 10-yard line. With 52 seconds left, Prescott found George Pickens at the front pylon for a touchdown, once again putting Dallas on top.

On the final drive, Wilson scrambled to get the Giants into Dallas territory, and with 25 seconds left on the clock, Wilson threw an absolutely perfect deep ball to Nabers, who beat double coverage for the score, to put New York up three.

But somehow, someway, the Cowboys drove just enough to get in range for a Brandon Aubrey last-second 64-yarder, and he drilled the kick to send the game to overtime. The two teams scored an incredible 41 combined points in the fourth quarter alone.

In overtime, after both teams failed to score on their first possessions, the Giants got another stop to get the ball back with 2:49 on the clock. But on second-and-13, Wilson made a poor decision to throw a pop-fly of a pass into the middle of the field, and it was intercepted by Donovan Wilson.

The Cowboys quickly got into field goal range, and Aubrey hit the game-winning 46-yard field goal as time expired in the extra period.

Wilson threw for a career-high 450 yards and three touchdowns, with that one huge interception. Nabers had nine catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and Robinson had eight catches for 142 yards and a touchdown.

Here are the key takeaways...

-- Penalties, penalties, penalties. It started on the opening kickoff, as a would-be 65-yard Gunner Olszewski return was brought back on a hold. The Giants then ended up getting three points on their opening drive, which was incredible given that left tackle James Hudson committed four penalties on the drive ( two personal fouls, two false starts).

A Robinson 50-yarder down the seam (which was brought back a bit by a Hudson personal foul at the end of the play) was the key to getting three points on the drive. Rookie fifth-round pick Marcus Mbow would take over at left tackle on the next drive.

The Giants would ultimately commit 14 accepted penalties.

-- There was so much talk after the opener about the Giants potentially making a change at quarterback. But with Dart looking on from the sideline (for most of the game), Wilson cooked.

Wilson looked great from the jump, attacking down the field and moving the offense well, despite all of the penalties up front. Wilson finished the first quarter 11 of 14 passing for 153 yards, but the Giants' first two drives stalled in the red zone, resulting in a pair of field goals.

In the second, Wilson continued to attack downfield, hitting Robinson down the seam again for another big gain before throwing a perfect 29-yard TD pass to Nabers, who made the acrobatic grab and held on to the ball to give the Giants a 13-3 lead.

-- More penalties, anyone? With the Cowboys driving late in the second quarter, Dru Phillips committed a silly personal foul by slamming Lamb to the ground on what should have been a big loss of yardage. Later on the drive, both teams committed a total of four penalties on one play, including the Giants having 12 men on the field after taking a timeout. Eventually, when all the dust settled, Prescott hit KaVontae Turpin for a touchdown to cut the lead to 13-10. And just for good measure, the Giants were offside on the play, but the penalty was obviously declined.

The Giants led 13-10 at the half despite committing a whopping nine (accepted) penalties. Wilson threw for 235 yards and a touchdown and had just three incompletions.

-- Phillips, after committing an earlier penalty, got his revenge on the second play of the second half, intercepting Prescott to swing the momentum fully back in New York's favor. Unfortunately, the Giants gave that momentum right back, as they were stopped on fourth-and-three from the 10-yard line. That huge interception ultimately netted zero points, and the Cowboys took their first lead of the game on the ensuing drive, with Javonte Williams scoring after the Giants' 11th penalty, a Phillips PI call against George Pickens. The Cowboys led 17-16 after three.

-- We did end up seeing Dart in this game, though maybe not under the circumstances people thought would be the case. With the Giants down 20-16 in the fourth, Dart came in for one play and handed it off to Cam Skattebo, who rumbled for 24 yards down to the one-yard line. Skattebo then fished the drive with his first NFL TD, giving the Giants a 23-20 lead.

It's starting to look more and more like Skattebo is now the Giants' No. 1 back. The rookie ended the day with 11 carries for 45 yards and a score.

-- The penalty bug bit the Giants again after they had just gone in front. On a 25-yard connection between Prescott and Lamb, Roy Robertson-Harris was called for roughing the passer, adding 15 more yards to bring the Cowboys to the edge of the red zone. Ultimately, Miles Sanders would scamper for a touchdown, putting Dallas back on top, 27-23.
